The client requested that information originally captured in a plain Word document be transformed into a professionally designed digital publication that could be hosted online via a public-facing link. The e-publication needed to reflect the gravity and importance of Stellenbosch University’s CIRCoRe initiative while remaining visually appealing and accessible to a lay audience unfamiliar with institutional terminology. In addition to clear navigation, the document was expected to reflect a high level of design polish, ensuring both credibility and engagement. The content, deeply rooted in transformation and social justice, required careful visual and editorial treatment to strike the right balance between academic authority and broad readability.
A key challenge lay in restructuring dense institutional text into a format that supported reader engagement without diluting meaning. The document contained complex historical timelines, sensitive issues of race, culture, and identity, and detailed committee processes. Presenting this in a user-friendly way meant overcoming potential reader fatigue while ensuring accessibility across diverse audiences. Another difficulty was ensuring that the design communicated inclusivity, professionalism, and transparency while avoiding visual clutter. Technically, the transition from Word to an interactive, web-ready format required careful attention to layout adaptability, multimedia integration, and cross-device compatibility.
To meet these challenges, publication design principles were strategically applied. A clear typographic hierarchy was established to guide readers through sections, supported by concise headings and subheadings. Interactive elements such as embedded videos, slideshows, scrollable articles, and timelines were used to break up large blocks of text and create a more immersive experience. Consistent visual branding and colour schemes reinforced institutional identity, while white space and modular layouts improved readability. Sensitive themes were supported with imagery and infographics that humanised the narrative without overwhelming it. The final e-publication successfully elevated the Word content into a polished, engaging digital magazine, achieving the client’s dual goals of professional credibility and accessibility to a general audience.
